THE SILENT SENTINELS

The Silent Sentinels: Minuteman Artwork Revealed

A 324-Page, Hardcover Book

9.25 x 11.25 with Beautiful Dust Jacket

The Silent Sentinels: Minuteman Artwork Revealed tells the story of the men and women who have operated, maintained, secured, and supported our Minuteman missile system through art, much of which is hidden below ground in areas rarely seen by the American public. Since 1961, Missileers have served as the Silent Sentinels across Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Missouri providing a key leg of America’s nuclear deterrence triad. These Missileers found perfect canvases in the large concrete walls for artistic expression.

The narrative and illustrations include a brief history of Minuteman, whose initial system life of ten years has been modified and upgraded multiple times for sixty plus years. Since its deployment, these Silent Sentinels have kept this system alert and ready—24 hours a day, seven days a week. They have driven millions of miles across the great plains through the best and worst weather that goes with it, to fulfill their mission responsibilities. While the mission is the same, the six wings of the Minuteman system—now reduced to three—each have a unique story.

Missileers reveal the intricate details of the mission, the events, and the people through morale patches, schoolhouse painted ceiling tiles, underground mural walls of the launch control centers, and finally music.
